25th Anniversary 2CD set released The Singing Americans name has a long, storied history in Southern Gospel music. Birthed in 1972, the group was home to many vocalists who are staples in Gospel Music today. Danny Funderburk, Michael English, Ivan Parker, Clayton Inman, Rick Strickland, Ed Hill, Dwayne Burke, David Sutton, Scott Whitener, and many more graced the stage as a Singing American. Although several combinations of these vocals have given great memories for Southern Gospel fans, the blend of Rick Strickland, Michael English, Ed Hill, and Dwayne Burke produced an excitement that was unmistakable whether on recordings or stage.
Any list of the top 10 (some top 5) recordings of all time in Southern Gospel Music will include “Live and Alive” and “Black and White” recorded in 1984 and 1985 respectively. It was the live recording of “I Bowed on My Knees and Cried Holy” that propelled The Singing Americans to a household name and gave Michael English a signature song that is as popular for him today as it was 25 years ago. These four vocalists recently reunited for the “100 years of Gospel Music” tribute at the National Quartet Convention in Louisville, KY.
